Blue Crew member reflects on cheering for the Jays in the Big East

1. Tell us about yourself.

My name is Nick Mascio, I am a senior advertising major from Omaha.

2. How long have you been in Blue Crew?

I’ve been in Blue Crew all four years of my college career.

3. What attracted you to joining Blue Crew?

I joined Blue Crew because I thought it looked incredibly fun and interesting even before I was a student. I grew up in Omaha and was always jealous of the guys in stripes who had the front row spots. I love Creighton basketball and always wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to get that close to the action.

4. What is your most memorable moment from being so close to the Creighton basketball team over the years?

My most memorable moment with the team would be the MVC Championship down in St Louis my sophomore year. We won a pretty competitive tournament, and the entire student section rushed the court. It was in that moment that I realized the Jays were serious.

5. What did you think of New York City?

New York City was the best. It was really inspiring for me to see places like Wall Street that make me think and act bigger. While a bit over-stimulating, my time spent there was nothing short of amazing. I don’t think I went to sleep before 5 a.m. any of the nights I was in town; it was like I fed off the energy of the city itself.

6. What did you like about traveling to the games?

Traveling to the games was unreal, one of the best opportunities I’ve had as a Creighton student so far. Traveling adds that additional investment in the team and the Creighton community. It was really cool walking down the streets of NYC and having random Jays fans give me high-fives and talk about the upcoming games. If there is one thing I learned, it is that Jays fans travel, and are all really friendly. It also gave me an opportunity to bond closer with Blue Crew. Any time you travel with a group, you’re going to get closer as friends.

7. What did you not like about traveling to the games?

The worst part about traveling was easily the bus ride. We drove all the way there and back. It was tough pretending that a single-person seat was a bed. That was terrible. 17 hours over night? Nah man, no thanks.

8. Describe being on the floor for college basketball history ( the first “new” Big East tournament).

Madison Square Garden is beautiful; I’ve never seen a better arena. It’s absolutely incredible to be on the floor. The atmosphere the tournament offered was intense and competitive, especially during the final. Providence fans can be a bit scary (and that’s coming from someone who has witnessed Wichita State’s fans quite a bit). They were hands-down the loudest and most intimidating fans I’ve ever seen.

9. What kind of advice would you offer for younger student looking to get involved?

If you’re looking to join, I hope you’re passionate. It’s a bit more work than what you see at the games. However, if you can make the time commitment, you can take it a long way. Traveling with the team definitely makes it all worth it.
