βBoeing Boeingβ is a comedic play that takes place in Paris, France featuring a man named Bernard, his fiancΓ©e Gloria, his three mistresses, a friend named Robert and his maid, Bertha. The play opens with the audience meeting Gloria, Bernard and Bertha at breakfast before Gloriaβs flight takes off. Bertha sees everything that happens in Bernardβs house and tries to help smooth situations. Gloria, Bernardβs fiancΓ©e, is a cheerful and dramatic American air hostess for the Trans World Airline. Bernard is an American businessman who lives in Paris, France. Right away, the audience can suspect something isnβt right because of how eager Bernard is for Gloria to get on the plane. Even she notices it and asks if he just wants to get rid of her quickly. The audience is then introduced to Bernardβs best friend from his childhood, Robert. Robert comes to Paris in hope of finding a wife and proceeds to stay with Bernard until he has found a place to stay.
We then find out the reason why Bernard was in such a hurry to get rid of Gloria; he has two other air hostesses that are coming in for lunch and dinner. The next air hostesses to visit are Gabrielle from the Alitalia airlines and Gretchen from the Lufthansa Airlines. Gabrielle is an Italian woman who is deeply in love with Bernard and is also engaged to him. Gretchen is a proud German who gives off the vibes as a rude and mean person, but deep down, is nice. She is also engaged to Bernard.
On a normal day, Bernard can easily pull off seeing all three of them because they never land in Paris at the same time. Thanks to Bertha, Bernard can continue his farce with the women because Bertha covers the situation by cooking what each woman likes to eat, cleaning the room that they all share unknowingly and reporting back to Bernard about updates on the women. But it was not a normal day at all for Bernard, Bertha and Robert because all three hostesses, due to weather, were stuck in Paris for the night.
While watching the play, it was not at all what I expected it to be. It had a different ending than Iβd imagined it would. I couldnβt help but feel sorry for Bertha. While Bernard had his fun with the three women, Bertha had to follow whatever Bernard and his three fiancΓ©es wanted.
βI thought the play was just wonderful and really funny,β said Debbie Bonacci, an audience member from Arkansas. βEverything they did was just fantastic; the characters were wonderful; the staging was wonderful; everything.β
I also loved watching the characters grow throughout the play. Bertha used to be the quiet maid and never really said what she was feeling, but towards the end, she lets Bernard know that she only has one life to live and this is taking a toll on her. Robert is seen as the awkward school friend who is clumsy, but manages to grow confidence in talking to the three women. The three hostesses in the end find out who they really love.
βI loved the attention to detail that was in the play,β Arts & Sciences freshman Chinyere Ibekwe said. βI thought it was well executed; it had the right amount of comedy without taking away from the play, and it also had moments when you connected with the characters.β
It is a really good comedy; there was hardly a moment of silence in this play because there were little things that made the audience laugh.
βBoeing Boeingβ is playing at the Omaha Community Playhouse through May 11.
