Senior Spotlight: Francesconi to go abroad

Name: Sara Francesconi

Major: Social Work

Hometown: Naperville, Ill.

Plans after graduation: I will be traveling to South America to learn Spanish at a local Spanish school in Sucre, Bolivia; I am uncertain when I’ll return to the United States at this point, but when I do, I’ll be looking for employment as a social worker, preferably with an emphasis on substance abuse and/or homelessness. I’m looking to continue exploring until I don’t want to, or can’t, anymore, so I’ll probably look for employment in a new, random city once I’m back in the U.S.

Favorite Creighton memory (or just a memorable moment!): I’m not sure how to choose a favorite because my favorite memories are generally from normal days that seem insignificant until I take a minute to look back. I will always cherish the laughs with friends, sitting on the front porch with my roommates, late night chats in the dorms freshman and sophomore years, my semester in the Dominican Republicβ€”the list is endless! I could probably list 10 favorite memories from the past month alone, so either I’m incredibly indecisive, or I really love this school. Maybe a bit of both, but I think I’ll spare you either way.

What will you take with you from your experience at CU?

I’m taking with me an acceptance of being uncomfortable and uncertain. As clichΓ© as it sounds, I’ve learned to simply accept the questions that come with life and enjoy the ride. I can’t say that all of the past four years has been easy, but each part added to the whole beautiful picture. I know I sound cheesy, but these are my true, sincere feelings. Maybe that’s part of being a nostalgic senior.

I also think I’ll be taking with me some wonderful friendsβ€”even if that may only be through phone calls and emails for a while.

What will you miss most about CU?

I’m going to miss the community. My stomach actually flips when I think about the day after graduation: The Word No One Wants to Say. Coming to Creighton was the best choice I’ve ever made, and I imagine that leaving will be accompanied by significant growing pains. I’m excited for the adventures to come, but I don’t know if I could ever hope for a stronger sense of community than the one I experienced here.

Sara Francesconi is in this week’s β€œSenior Spotlight.” After graduation, she will travel to Bolivia to learn Spanish.
