Graduates sum up the last four years in one song

It’s the time of the year for yearbooks and senior superlatives.

Sadly, Creighton students don’t get yearbooks unless they’re in medical school, so there are no senior superlatives.

But who really needs superlatives when you can find a song to sum up four years?

A class song seems to be the best fit for the class of 2014, which saw two university presidents and the move to the Big East athletic conference. (Maybe Bob Dylan’s eternal hit β€œThe Times They Are A-Changin’” would be in the running.)

The Creightonian reached out to Creighton seniors on social media, asking what songs best represent their fours years at Creighton.

The responses ranged from oldies but goodies to recent chart toppers.

Some songs are meant to represent the spirit of the senior class, while other songs just remind people of Creighton.

Johnson, who plans on entering library sciences, can’t remember the first time she heard β€œDynamite” by Tao Cruz, but she remembers it was the theme song for Welcome Week her freshman year and so it was played at every single event that week.

β€œWhile it doesn’t particularly represent my whole experience at Creighton, I will never be able to listen to it again without thinking of Creighton,” said Elizabeth Johnson, a College of Arts & Sciences senior.

Gabby Hart, a College of Arts & Sciences senior, made a video set to β€œMoth’s Wings” by Passion Pit as a leader for Welcome Week. She said she will always think of Creighton whenever she hears that song.

Hart’s true class song submission is β€œone of those windows down, sunroof open, driving around just for kicks feel-good kind of songs.”

When she heard β€œLife in Color” by One Republic, it was immediately one of her favorites.

β€œI think it does a nice job of addressing both the good and bad/ups and downs that come along with being a college student and life in general,” said Hart, who will proudly tell you she’s a sociology major still figuring out her next adventure in life.

β€œMy favorite line is β€˜this is life in motion’ because if my time at Creighton has taught me anything, it’s that life never stops movingβ€”whether we are ready for it or not.”

Like Hart, John Sarmiento, a College of Arts & Sciences senior, chose his pick for the class of 2014 song to represent his college experience.

β€œMy college experience has been full of wonders, highs and lows and randomness,” Sarmiento said. β€œSometimes you just need to listen and to be present [to] the great things that are happening every day and moment.”

On several playlists for CCSJ service trip drives, Sarmiento heard β€œListen to the Music” by the Doobie Brothers, a rock band from the 70s.

Sarmiento, who will pursue his Masters in Public Health at the University of North Texas Health Science Center next year, said his second choice to describe his four years at Creighton would be β€œHome” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
