βFuryβ demonstrates flawlessly the power in banding together to face adversity and has a well-written story deserving of attention.
World War II is wrapping up in 1945, but battles are continuing in Germany.Β Don Collier (Brad Pitt) is a veteran leader specialized in mobilizing and operating tanks for the United States Army. The audience follows him and his diverse five-man unit as they take on the Germans within the confines of a tank named Fury.
The film does a fantastic job exploring the barbaric nature of war while highlighting the underrated importance of brotherhood. The storyline really tests the characters as they are faced with balancing the two in order to survive.Β
Casting for the movie is superb with Pitt being accompanied by Shia LaBeouf, Michael Pena, and Jon Bernthal.
Actor Logan Lerman, who plays a young soldier with inexperience compared to the rest of the unit in the movie, is a great example of how the brutality of war can affect the innocence of a person.
Overall the character development and interactions amongst the five men are some of the best aspects of the movie. Overcoming hard objectives both brings them together and tests them to extremes.
The story flows well with a great performance of Pittβs dominant character, nicknamed βWar Daddy.β Director David Ayer describes, in a featurette, Pittβs character as βbeing very stoic but with life and humor and love for his men and a true hatred for the enemy.β You can really feel how much Pitt is looking after the men he is leading. It is almost like a father-son relationship.
Visually, the movie has a lot of grim imagery and gray scenery. The camera does a great job highlighting the tank Fury as a weapon of war but also a home for the unit.Β Some of the best scenes filmed are within the confines of the tank as the characters interact in dealing with their reality. There are intense war scenes filmed with the primary focus being on the tanks.
I like this movie and would definitely recommend watching it. It is great to watch five different characters have to put differences aside to achieve common objectives and goals. The plot does not cover a long time frame. But the few scenes focusing on pivotal points within the time line on highlights a good, and developing, story. There is a lot of symbolism in the movie with a realistic message about the psychological powers
of war.Β
