On Nov. 4, Creighton students will have the opportunity to vote between two candidates for Creighton Students Union President in the annual CSU elections.
To help students learn more about who could potentially be representing them, the Creightonian Opinion Section conducted interviews with both candidates. We asked the candidates what motivated them to run for office, what they would hope to accomplish as president and what makes them passionate about Creighton. Molly Anne Krebs is a College of Arts & Sciences junior from Chicago, Ill. studying Medical Anthropology and Health Administration and Policy. Running alongside her for CSU Vice President is College of Arts & Sciences sophomore Meg Maynard.
Why are you running for CSU President?Β
Over the past three years, Iβve been involved with multiple organizations. Iβm a student coordinator of a living-learning community, and Iβve really helped groups flourish. I really think that since this is my last year, I really feel like I can put my skills and ability to the test, and really make a serious impact on the community here.
What do you think makes you qualified to be CSU President?
So last year, around this time, I was very unhappy at Creighton, and I went to my Honors professor, and he said, βIβm going to ask you one question: βwhat are you good at?ββ And I said, βsir, I get s— done.β And he was like, βI really think you should stay.β
With that being said, from that moment forward, I committed myself to empowering the individual here at Creighton. I started up Haven, which is a feminist society. I started up UDI [Unitas Ductum Ipsum]Β which is the new living-learning community, and I planned Skutt Shutdown. Skutt Shutdown was one of the proudest moments of my college career here. Being able to get to know 100 organizations on this campus and really hear what theyβre doing, and what theyβre passionate about was really, almost like enlightening and empowering.
In addition to Skutt Shutdown, Iβm a desk worker in Swanson; Iβm the Vice President of the Medical Anthropology Society; and Iβm the VP of Programming for HAPSA [Health Administration and Policy Student Association]. So I feel like I have my experience. In terms of my administration, Iβve talked with Tanya Wiengard and Fr. Lannon and Allison Taylor about sexual assault policies and how we need to improve them. I feel like I have that rapport and that professionalism that I can create that [legislation] and really put it into practice.
What do you think CSUβs role should be on campus?
CSU is the voice of every student, from the freshman that comes in [his or her] first week during Welcome Week to the M4 Med Student. Itβs not just the voice; itβs the voices of the students. To be that face that everyone knows and knows that you can speak for.
If you were elected CSU president, what would you like to accomplish?
There are three things that Iβm very passionate about, and Meg is as well, but the first is an environmentally-friendly campus. The whole state of California banned plastic bags. I think we can make small steps to make an environmentally-friendly [campus].
The second is cyber-bullying. Yik Yak is a great start; however, cyber bullying happens across all forms of social media. I think if we really embody the Jesuit value of being men and women for and with others, respecting the person in front of you and online is a great way to go about that.Β
And then the third is sexual assault policies. They suck for both the victim and the accused. Thereβs very little support available going through that situation, and the CU Public Safety Report may not be entirely accurate when presenting assaults that happen on campus.
What do you think would make you stand out as a CSU president?
Β In the past 16 years, there have only been three female presidents. I take great pride in being a strong female leader on this campus, and I hope to be that mentor and idol that people can look up to, especially women, to go for it, to go for that leadership position. This is a huge job for 12 months, and I understand that itβs not what everybody wants to do, but I feel that I do have that drive and that passion to make Creighton a great place, an even better place than it is, to leave it better than how I came and found it.
Whatβs your favorite thing about Creighton?
I love cheering on the Jays at the basketball games. The joke around Blue Crew [Krebs is also a member of Blue Crew] now is that if Iβm elected president, Iβm going to be wearing my pants during the game because I wonβt have time to go to the games anymore.
Becker or Brandeis?
BrandeisβI lived in Swanson for two years, so Brandeis was always my go-to.
Old Billy Bluejay or New Billy Bluejay?
Oh, donβt make me choose. I love retro Billy, but I have both forms of Billy on my planner.
Why should Creighton students vote for you?
Iβve got that drive to really make Creighton a better place within 12 months, if Iβm given the 12 months. The drive, the passion, the commitment, the experience, the skills, the rapport.
