Creighton brings Starbucks to campus

Starting Monday, Oct. 5, Starbucks on Creighton campus opened to the public after months of construction. Students swarmed Skutt in their eagerness to try out the newest addition to student life; according to Arts & Sciences sophomore Jade Cameron, 650 student customers visited in the span of six hours on Monday, and 800 on Tuesday. Although the popular coffee chain’s new installation prompted mixed responses, it generally was received with warm welcome and plenty of fall drink orders to kick off the new month. You’ve seen the signs β€” around campus, that is. After months, even years, of student anticipation, Creighton and Sodexo partnered this spring to install a Starbucks in the Skutt Student Center. Construction lasted from late spring through the end of September, and this Monday’s opening put an end to weeks-long suspense and impatience.Β

One would think the lines this week winding around the corners of Skutt were for some sort of movie premiere or boy-band concert, but it may be, in fact, the new definition of the in-between class rush.

This hustle and bustle is felt none more acutely than by Starbucks’s newest employees β€” most of whom are Creighton students themselves.

β€œNinety-eight percent of our staff has never worked at Starbucks before, so we were kind of thrown into it,” Arts and Sciences junior Kristyn Wong said. β€œWe know we probably mess up a lot of the drinks since we’re just starting, but the general student body has been supportive and letting our mistakes slide.”

Also new to the art of coffee-making, Arts and Sciences sophomore Maddy Mize had words of praise to add for the new cast of young baristas.Β

β€œWe’re all like one big family already,” Mize said about the working environment. β€œThe managers are so nice. I really love working there even though it’s crazy busy all the time.”

For some students, though, Starbucks being so close to home ground might be a bit of an unwelcome change.

β€œI think it’s great that Creighton is willing to change and adapt to appease student demands, but I personally don’t like that Starbucks is now a part of campus,” Arts and Sciences senior Danielle Gatapia said. β€œIt makes the student center a hub of noise…and associates Creighton with giant corporations that do not need any more money.

β€œThere are other reforms going on around campus, such as eliminating plastic bags from campus, that I find of much more importance than if my coffee is name-brand or not,” she added.

Whether you’re downing Pumpkin Spice Lattes or diverting your efforts for campus change elsewhere, Starbucks at Creighton is certainly a trademark of this year’s fall semester.

β€œI think it’s awesome,” Arts and Sciences senior Sonnie Lee said. β€œIt’s so convenient, so I don’t have to run downtown or to 72nd to get a quick coffee fix.”
