Blending coffee and faith

As a way for Creighton University students to come together and discuss their faith in a warm and inviting environment, Agape Latte was introduced to campus beginning April 5. Β

Β As its mission states, β€œAgape Latte provides warm coffee, hospitable space, and meaningful stories of everyday faith.” Β

Β According to Arts and Sciences senior Maria Watson, it is intended to β€œbe a resource for students to learn and explore their own spirituality” Watson, who serves as a core team member who spreads the word about the event. Β

Β β€œAgape Latte is a program that was brought here from Boston College that connects students with other campus rock stars on the basis of sharing stories about faith journeys,” says Watson. Β

Β Creighton University’s Campus Ministry held its first Agape Latte event at the Skutt Fireplace with guest speaker Charisse Williams, assistant dean for the undergraduate Business programs. Β

Β Williams shared her faith journey, speaking near a packed Skutt staircase filled with students eager to listen and indulge in the free coffee and sweets. Β

Β In her discussion, Williams spoke on faith being on her own terms, often reiterating to students that β€œJesus has the wheel, and he’s the ultimate GPS.” Β

Β β€œI liked the sense of community at Agape Latte,” said College of Nursing freshman Mariah Gay. β€œThere was a really good turnout, and it was really cool to see so many people coming to listen to someone speak about their faith journey.”

Β Agape Latte plans to do monthly events with a variety of speakers from Creighton’s campus. Β

β€œI can see Agape Latte being a monthly event that the Creighton community looks forward to,” said Arts and Sciences sophomore Liz Macro, who is a member of the social media core team.

Β β€œCampus Ministry is a place that is such a great home base for so many people on this campus, and I think Agape Latte is going to be such a great way to extend that reach to the rest of campus too,” Watson said. Β

Β β€œI β€” along with everyone else who helped plan the event β€” was super pleased at how the first Agape Latte event went,” Macro said. β€œWe couldn’t have asked for a better speaker or audience.”
