Discovering ‘How to Adult’ in life after college

The third installment of the β€œHow to Adult” series, hosted by the Career Center, commenced Thursday focusing on life and careers after graduation.Β

Rachel Gibson, associate director of the Creighton Career Center, kicked off the session by asking some of the seniors what they wanted from their careers. Β

β€œWhere will you be 10 years from now?” she said.β€œWhat does your day look like? What have you accomplished today?” Β

After garnering some answers about the seniors’ big picture plan, she brought it back to the next year of their lives.Β

Β As the seniors imagined the ideal situations for the next year, they mentioned living in cities across the country, working at specific firms, doing their residencies and practicing law for years to come.Β

After the seniors had pinpointed some of the specifics of their life after Creighton, Gibson began to show the seniors who were still looking for jobs after graduation some of the resources available to them.Β

She focused on different tests to reveal strengths to be used on resumes and websites to search for internships.Β

Sarah Meltz, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, was excited about the session.Β

β€œI’m really looking for the opportunity to grow, do cool things, and be challenged,” Meltz said. Β

Meltz said the session answered some of her questions about interviews and how to know if the places she was looking at were right for her.Β

The event and the lecture series were coordinated by Emma Rapp, the assistant director of the Student Leadership & Involvement Center.Β

Beginning in February, the series has covered topics such as financial literacy, career searching, and will cover more social topics in the coming month, according to Rapp. Β

The series began as a seniors bringing ideas to Rapp in September, when she began planning ways the ease the transition between collegiate and post-collegiate life.Β

Β β€œIt kind of came about because we got some seniors together, asked them what they feel like they need before they graduate,” Rapp said.Β

While this session focused on finding the right career, the next lecture on Wednesday is about β€œDiscerning Your Fit” in the Skutt Student Center Ballroom, beginning at 7 p.m.Β
