Networking, resumes and internships are the hot topics at Creighton University this spring.
Creighton stresses the importance of undergraduate internships by providing students with the job search website “Jobs4Jays”, career fairs, faculty tips and the resources of the John P. Fahey Career Center.
Claire Pelton, a senior in the Heider College of Business, has utilized the Career Center throughout her four years at Creighton.
From proofreading her resume to getting her in contact with alumni, the Career Center was there to help.
Pelton has had six internships during her time at Creighton and just landed a full-time job that will start after she graduates.
She says that a big reason she landed this job was because she had a lot of different types of experiences to reference, which made her stand out against all of the other applicants.
“Don’t be afraid to ask to be challenged during your internship. Your employer will appreciate that you aren’t there to waste their time,” Pelton says about making the most of your internship experience.
Lauren Pipitone, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences also had six internships throughout her college career.
She valued her internships because they taught her how to be quick on her feet and how to make split decisions.
Internships can also be an important resume builder for applying to graduate schools, Pipitone said.
“Without knowledge of the field, it is hard for a graduate program to want to invest in you if you don’t even know what a day in the field is really like,” Pipitone said.
The College of Nursing does not stress the importance of internships as much as other colleges, but some students apply for internships to get a personal grasp on their future careers.
Lauren Fleege, a senior in the College of Nursing, said the one internship was all she needed so she could get a grasp on what nursing actually was outside of clinical.
