The department of Public Safety has implemented existing but previously unenforced rules for campus parking administration this year. After a year of what seemed to be like never-ending parking violations and parking lots that never seemed to have space for students, it was decided that a return to original policies was in order.
One of the major changes that has been made is the new parking permit. A parking permit is required for all students who drive their car to campus and park it in areas owned or leased by the university. This year, the university has transitioned from a sticker to a repositionable decal, which is to be affixed to the interior of the front windshield on the passenger side. The permit costs students $350.
There are also evening only parking passes available. With these free passes, one can park on campus from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and at all times on weekends in any campus lots.
According to Public Safety, the decal will be much more convenient for students than previous yearsβ stickers were. It allows for students reposition their decal from one car to another if they get a new car during the school year, are driving a loaner vehicle while theirs is being repaired, or if they carpool with someone else and take turns driving to campus.
The interior positioning of the decal also offers more security and piece of mind that it will not fall off and get lost or stolen.
It is Public Safetyβs hope that the convenience of the repositionable decals will decrease the amount of parking citations handed out this year.
There has also been a slight change to some parking regulations in an attempt to make more parking space for student drivers. During normal business hours, students may only park in student parking lots. Students are not allowed to park in faculty/staff parking lots during student breaks or holidays when the university is still open. However, students with valid permits may park in faculty/staff lots from 4 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday through Friday and any time on weekends.
Any questions regarding campus parking should be directed to the Department of Public Safety at 402-280-2104. Their office is located at 2222 Burt St. and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
