Multicultural sorority, Sigma Lambda Gamma, hosts informational meeting

On Wednesday, the multicultural sorority Sigma Lambda Gamma held a meeting to detail the highlights of their organization and inform potential new members about upcoming recruitment events being held this week.Β

Sigma Lambda Gamma is a multicultural sorority on Creighton’s campus and it is also the largest multicultural sorority in the nation boasting over 110 nationalities. Creighton’s SLG chapter works with intercultural groups on campus in order to continue multicultural engagement and learn about Creighton’s diverse student body.Β

β€œSLG is an important organization on campus because it unites women of all different cultures and backgrounds together,” senior Janeth Arvizu Rivera said. β€œWe are a multicultural sorority that works towards giving women the skillset to be confident leaders and advocates. Through SLG, girls not only find a sisterhood but a support system that is there to celebrate every triumph and also support when times are rough.”

Through an annual potluck, involvement with the American Red Cross, the TRIO Program, and the American Heart Association, SLG is active in Omaha’s community.Β

β€œWe are working with the Red Cross and hope to host a blood drive soon,” junior Vi Conrad said. β€œWe also are strengthening our relationship with the TRIO program by tutoring and mentoring high schoolers.”

Along with engaging in important intercultural work both on-campus and off-campus, SLG maintains a close community with opportunities for leadership.Β

β€œWe have cultivated a chill vibe,” Conrad said. β€œIt feels more like a kickback than a chapter meeting.”

Senior Annabelle Manjooran discussed how participating in SLG allowed her to break out of her comfort zone and find new ways to be a leader within the community.Β

β€œI never thought about joining a sorority… SLG seemed more close-knit and the smaller community could help me grow,” Manjooran reflected.Β

The smaller size of the sorority also allows for more in-person events and meetings.Β

β€œWith COVID impacting pretty much everything, SLG has given me some semblance of normal,” Conrad said. β€œBecause we are so small, we have been able to meet in person… It definitely breaks up the monotony of classes and work.”

While the sorority was able to hold in-person meetings throughout COVID, they are hoping to be able to hold more events in the coming year.Β

On Feb. 18, SLG will hold their first date party and it will be open to all Creighton students. The theme is Gatsby and Gammas and registration is open on CU Involved. Students planning to attend the event must register by Feb. 11 on the CU Involved website.Β

As SLG gears up for another round of recruitment and continues to host new events, each member shared how the sorority impacted their experience at Creighton.Β

β€œThe ladies of SLG have become some of my closest friends and have made my Creighton experience so much greater,” member Arvizu said. β€œThey’ve taught me to take risks and be unafraid as well as to be more intentional about what I involve myself in.”
