With the closing of applications to be a part of the New Student Orientation team, the organizationβs executives have been tasked with forming the new NSO team for this upcoming year.Β
NSO is a tradition that Creighton has had for years, and it continues this year. The students that will be aiding in helping incoming students transition smoothly into Creightonβs community are selected from an applicant pool after an interview process.Β
βThe interview process for New Student Orientation helps us assess applicantsβ understanding of the purpose and mission of Summer Preview and Welcome Week,β Justin Stoeckle, Assistant Director for Student Leadership and Involvment, said. βOne of the most critical components to being a part of the New Student Orientation team is having an understanding of why orientation is important to the student experience, and how Guides play a role in it all.βΒ
After students applied through the online βCreightonConnectβ portal, where they submitted a resume in addition to their application, they were instructed to set up an interview time.Β
NSO, through a long tradition of encouraging students to be servant leaders and live out the Jesuit values in helping new students transition into college life, has given current Creighton students many leadership opportunities.Β
βBeing a peer leader or guide impacts the Creighton Community by offering opportunities for growth and involvement for both NSO leaders and the new students,β Welcome Week Executive Amy Gassel said.Β
For current Creighton students looking to get involved and assume a leadership role, NSO has served as an organization that encourages these.Β
βFor a lot of students, New Student Orientation is their first time assuming the role of a student leader on campus,β said Stoeckle. βI would say that New Student Orientation is a great first step in a studentβs journey to figure out how they can best be a leader on campus.βΒ
In addition to providing current students with leadership opportunities, NSO, at its core, is about introducing incoming students to the Creighton community and making sure that their transition is as easy as possible.Β
βNew Student Orientation is an experience all Creighton students have participated in and provides the stepping stone for the next four years of their college experience,β Alex Klingman coordinator for this yearβs Summer Preview team, said.Β
Interviews for this yearβs NSO team are under way and the executive team along with Stoeckle are set to interview potential candidates this weekend.
