On Monday night executive FSL members and students were invited to the Harper Ballroom for the VIP Center’s Safety Series presentation of These Hands Don’t Haze. 

Associate Director Sarika Griffin spoke about the harm caused by hazing and how important it is that it comes to an end on college campuses. The presentation gave students a look into how harmful hazing is in Greek life and even in other campus activities. 

She also shared statistics such as how more than 50% of students involved in clubs, teams, and other organizations experience hazing, and 95% of those who have experienced hazing didn’t report it. 

Griffin gave insight on what potential signs of hazing are and how you can identify and address it. Another key part of Griffin’s presentation was showing how hazing doesn’t just have to be in Greek life. 

She shared the story of Robert Champion, a member of the marching band at Florida A&M University. He participated in the mandatory initiation for the marching band and was killed from blunt trauma from this act of hazing. 

FSL president, Atta Toosi, expressed, “hazing has plagued FSL throughout many generations and it is up to us to stop that.” This was a testament to the importance of how important positive experiences are on Creighton’s campus.
