The city of Omaha has hundreds of thrift stores, and I am going on a journey to check some of them out.
For Creighton students, the city outside of campus is one of untapped opportunity and adventure. For a vintage clothes junkie like me, the opportunity that excites me the most about living in this great city is all of the thrift stores in which to shop.
Iβve decided to take my position as a scene columnist and passion for thrift stores and combine the two in this new series; each week (or every other week), I will check a new thrift or secondhand clothes spot and report back with its details.
For this first week, I knew I had to hit up an absolute Creighton student classic: Thrift World.
While Thrift World has multiple locations around Omaha, I took on the one closest to campus. It is a staple for students shopping for outfit options for various themed events, specifically Halloween. Sandwiched right on the corner of Leavenworth Street and Park Avenue and less than a mile from Creighton grounds, the parking lot was packed when I pulled in.
As expected from a typical secondhand spot, Thrift World had all the goods. There was a great variety of items: jewelry, home dΓ©cor, childrenβs toys and, of course, rows and rows of clothes.
The selection certainly did not disappoint, and the store was relatively large for a thrift spot.
What is unique about Thrift World is that it has a separate section for βvintageβ clothes that are all marked up in price. Itβs clear that the employees have an eye for what is valuable, as some of the items were pretty sweet finds that you wouldnβt see walking down a normal aisle.
Another unique aspect of the store is that it has special deals for certain demographics on different days of the week. I was there on a Thursday, which meant that all items were 30% off for teachers only.
Just before grabbing a couple things and checking out, I was informed by one of the employees that Thrift World has eight different locations spanning three states, as well as a website on which items are put up for sale.
On the website, you can access more history about the store, their mission and all of the cool clothes for sale. Visit one of their locations in person or check them out online at https://thriftworld.com/.
