Creighton Dance Team recruits using a skills clinic

On Saturday, Jan. 20, Ruth Scott Training Center hosted the Creighton Dance Team’s Clinic at 9:45 AM.

The clinic was aimed at and promoted to high schoolers and current Creighton undergraduate students who showed interest in the team. This event was able to give those interested an inside look at the skills and camaraderie of the Creighton Dance Team.

The clinic spanned from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. and was built to provide attendees with an inside look of a dancer on the Creighton Dance team. Attendees were taught Creighton’s fight song, a sideline routine, and a pom routine usually performed at halftime of Creighton Men’s Basketball games.

One of the unique and collaborative aspects of the clinic was the Q&A session focusing on the dance team and student life at Creighton University. The panel covered various topics, spanning from tryouts, the day-to-day schedule of a Creighton dancer, majors, travel commitments, and the challenge of balancing student life, classes, and dance practices and performances.

Kysa Holmstrom, sophomore captain of the Creighton Dance Team, expressed enthusiasm for the clinic.

Holmstrom said, β€œI loved watching the girls performing the routines in groups and being able to cheer them on individually.”

As captain, Holmstrom could echo the positive atmosphere shown during the clinic. The event’s success was also noticed by sophomore dancer Gracee Fitch, who taught the attendees each routine along with her fellow dancers.

Fitch stated, β€œI feel like this clinic is a great way to recruit for dance teams within the Omaha area.”

There were 11 attendees at the clinic, which seemed to be a significant drop from last year when there were around 20 attendees. Holmstrom believed it to be the weather that caused many dancers to miss the clinic altogether.

Despite the weather challenges, Omaha natives and other neighboring cities had filled up most of the attendance. The Dance Team Clinic at the Ruth Scott Training Center showed the passion and excitement that is intertwined with the Creighton Dance Team.

Through the performances, practices, a Q&A panel, and commitment to the attendees, the event paved the way for the future of the Creighton Dance Team.
