“How do you deal with an [uncomfortable] Uber driver who [talks about] trilogies on the Illuminati?!?”
Dear Bluejay,
This is definitely a crazy uber ride!
I understand that it can be tempting to talk about the mysteries of secret societies, especially the Illuminati. While it can be super entertaining that your Uber driver has these types of thoughts, your top priority in an atypical situation should always be staying safe.
Riding with Uber or other rideshare services like this is a great resource for people. But as a rider, taking steps to protect yourself is crucial. I thought of some tips and tricks to help you stay safe during rides that have interesting conversations like these with strangers.
I would always double-check the car’s license plate, make, model and driver’s photo with the information in the app before you get in. I never ask, “Is this Uber for NAME?” I instead always ask, “Who are you picking up?” This way, the driver has to confirm your name, such that you don’t have to volunteer it.
Also, make sure that you’re in the right car with the right driver, especially if meeting a driver in a crowded place. When I’m alone in an Uber, I use the “Share My Trip” feature to send my real-time location and estimated arrival time to my mom or my roommate. This keeps someone aware of where you are and when you expect to arrive.
While in the car, sitting in the back seat gives you better personal space, more awareness, visibility and a clear path to leave the vehicle if needed. If your driver starts to have a conversation with you about something that makes you uncomfortable—trilogies about the Illuminati included—I would just politely react or nod along. But I would avoid sharing personal details about your life, schedule or destination beyond what’s absolutely necessary.
If something feels off, trust your gut. If the conversation takes an uncomfortable turn or the driver acts strangely, don’t hesitate to end the ride. A lot of rideshare apps have an “Emergency Assistance” feature to report issues or contact police.
When you are out late during the semester, try to travel with friends or use Creighton shuttle services if they’re available.
Whether attending a weekend party or a late study session, planning ahead on how you’ll get home is really important before heading out. I hope these tips make your rideshare journeys more manageable!
Best, Bluejay
