Students take advantage of the Wellness Team’s Fresh Fruit Friday

On Fridays, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Kiewit Fitness Center spine, members of the wellness team hand out free fresh fruit to students.Β

The Wellness Team here at Creighton strives to promote wellness on campus. Creighton’s wellness website notes the importance of wellness and highlights what wellness might look like for different people.Β

β€œWe may think of wellness as the ability to be physically active, or to have the energy to perform our daily tasks and care for our loved ones,” the website says. β€œIt may be that some feel that it is being free of illness or disease and others see it as a feeling of happiness and prosperity. The Creighton Wellness Program works hard to fit everyone’s needs.”

β€œI think it’s a good way to instigate healthy eating. We are here to facilitate talking about wellness, which is something we have to push harder for here on campus.” Anna Fujikami, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, said when asked why she chose to grab fruits.Β

Emma Hickman, a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences, continued, saying, β€œIt’s a good way to promote whole foods and healthier snacks for student’s diets.”

Both noted that eating healthier directly correlates with improved mental health, that when you eat foods that are better for your body, you will ultimately feel better.Β

Melody Lum, a freshman in the College of Arts and Sciences, grabbed both bananas and apples on Fresh Fruit Friday.Β

β€œFruit is expensive,” she said. β€œA bundle of apples at Target can be as much as $8 and as college students, most of us don’t have enough money to buy whole foods like that. I’m using my resources here at Creighton to get fresh fruit.”

β€œOur program is designed to support the Creighton mission of cura personalis (or care for the whole person) and create a culture of health for everyone in the Creighton community,” Creighton’s website says. β€œThe program intentionally offers education, resources, accountability and motivation in the following Pillars of Well-being: Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, Intellectual, Financial and Environmental.”
