According to CNN, Super Bowl LVII was the third most-watched television program in American history with 113 million viewers. With that many people watching, football wasnβt the only important thing going on.Β
Rihanna returned for her first live performance in seven years for the Super Bowl halftime show. During the 13-minute performance, Rihanna sang some of her biggest career hits, including βBitch Better Have My Money,β βDiamonds,β βUmbrella,βΒ βWorkβ and more.Β
The halftime show sparked immediate speculation of a second pregnancy, which was confirmed by Rihannaβs representatives following the game. Rihanna had said that there would be a special guest appearance; this turned out to be an elaborate pregnancy announcement.Β Β
During the performance, Rihanna wore a zipped-down jacket that emphasized her stomach. She also brought attention to her stomach through her dance moves, which confirmed to many social media users that Rihanna was announcing a pregnancy. Β
The zipped-down jacket wasnβt the only part of her costume that drew attention. Many TikTok users speculated that she was wearing a rubber top to avoid any lactation stains, as Rihanna has confirmed that she is breastfeeding her first child who is currently nine months old. Β
The halftime show averaged 118.7 million viewers, per Fox, but the reaction to the performance was mixed. Β
Some people thought that Rihanna could have done more for her performance, saying she stayed in one place the majority of the time. Twitter user @Liz_Wheeler complained about the performance being inappropriate for the family audience that the Super Bowl attracts. Β
Others, though, thought that Rihannaβs performance was spectacular and congratulated her on performing so well while pregnant. Twitter user @KendallRaeOnYT said, βRihanna doing the halftime show like 9 months postpartum AND pregnant, women are amazing.βΒ
Rihanna wasnβt the only one performing at the halftime show though. Justina Miles served as her American Sign Language interpreter. Videos of her high-energy performance have gone viral, with some arguing that her interpretation of Rihannaβs performance rivaled the show itself. Β
Miles, 20, made history as the first female deaf performer at the show and is also the first deaf person to ever perform the pre-showβs βLift Every Voice and Sing,β sung by actress Sheryl Lee Ralph, per CNBC. Β
βJustina Miles stole the show as Rihannaβs Super Bowl halftime show ASL performer!!β said Twitter user @AlejandroRoark.Β
Not everyone had the opportunity to watch the halftime show though. Andy Reid reportedly forbade Kansas City Chiefs players from watching the performance. Β
βI heard it was great,β said Patrick Mahomes on βJimmy Kimmel Liveβ on Monday. βCoach Reid told us, βIf you go out to watch the performance, just keep walking because youβre not playing the rest of the game.ββΒ
Although not everyone had the opportunity to watch the halftime show live, those interested in viewing the performance can find the full video on YouTube, Twitter or TikTok.Β
