Multicultural formal postponed to spring

A week ago today, a woman in a burgundy dress walked into Harper to attend the Multicultural Formal. Instead of walking into a ballroom filled with people jiving to the beat of the music, the woman walked into the dance that never happened.Β Β

Although the woman was informed by an email confirmation, no one was dancing. The woman scratched her head. Did she miss something?Β

Yes. Yes, she did. The woman strut down the mall, figuring the formal was occurring in the Skutt ballroom. It might have been in another ballroom, and she was the kind of person to not miss a dance. Who wouldn’t want to miss a dance, anyway?Β

After being informed about an event that already took place in the Skutt ballroom, the woman sat down and composed an email, and that email was sent to the wrong address. After deciding to go home, that said woman sent additional emails.Β The Multicultural Spring Formal, undergoing a name changeΒ due to postponement, is supposed to be sponsored by the Creighton University Latino Student Association, the Creighton Intracultural Center, Creighton University Gender and Sexuality Alliance, the South Asian Student Association and Hui β€˜O Hawai’i Club.Β

β€œUnfortunately, after discussing with the other multicultural organizations, we have decided to postpone the Winter Formal to Saturday, April 27, 2024,” said Sarah Fujiwara, who is the secretary for Hui β€˜O Hawai’i. Club members were informed in a general meeting and via email about the postponement, according to Fujiwara. Unfortunately, there was miscommunication on a website regarding information about the formal.Β

β€œThe multicultural winter formal includes SASA, HUI, GSA and CULSA,” said Riya Jain, the co-president of the South Asian Student Association.Β Β

Ene Gomez, a member of Creighton University Latino Student Association, also said, β€œThe event was postponed.”

As the woman walked back to her dorm in black boots, she wondered how she could have missed information about the story she was supposed to write. Besides, she needed a dance anyway. It had been quite the week. Fortunately, she figured a story can be about an event that got postponed.Β Β

No one was dancing that night, at least not in the Harper ballroom. It was lit, with no one except the woman in it. Music filled the Starbucks instead of the ballroom, and the only lights that strobed audiences were the blue lights above the Harper staircase. No one danced, but the woman clicked her heels against the pavement on her way to cover the story.Β

While no reporter or person can predict the future and can be sure about schedules, life has a sure way of showing the unexpected. The thrill of making a storyβ€”whether or notΒ there is oneβ€”is discovering what the story is to tell. Despite not dancing that night, the woman would go on to dance and move on from such a weird and bizarre week. Nonetheless, it was a bizarre day for the woman and every person she interrogated about the formalβ€”the danceβ€”that did not happen. For anyone who made the mistake of going to an event at the wrong time like that woman, this is what happened.Β

Despite one woman having weird encounters and writingΒ a story about no story, a different person danced to the beat of the music somewhere. Maybe with a little bit of miscommunication and grace, another person can dance with someone else at the Multicultural SpringΒ Formal.Β

β€œThis event is called our β€˜Multicultural Spring Formal’ and will take place on April 27, Saturday at 7p.m.!” said Lindsey Kimoto, the president ofHui β€˜O Hawai’i Club.Β
