Saint Motel entertains Jays

JONAH LAGRANGE/THE CREIGHTONIAN

Fallapalooza featured Almost Monday (left) and Saint Motel (right) at the Admiral Theatre in Omaha. Saint Motel, the main act, sang and danced alongside the crowd.

This past Friday, November 14, the Creighton University Student Program Board held their beloved yearly tradition of Fallapalooza. This tradition embraces a free concert opportunity for Creighton students with various artists, this year’s genre being indie and alternative with the opening band being the San Diego indie band β€œAlmost Monday” and the headliner of Los Angeles indie band, β€œSaint Motel”.

Held at the Admiral Theater, students were taken on buses to the venue and were given foam glow sticks upon entering to wave around and enhance the concert experience. Students also had the option of purchasing Saint Motel merch at the table there. To kick off the night, Almost Monday swept away the crowd with an impressive musical production, with the bass guitarist, electric guitarist, and the drummer it had the crowd getting groovy and moving from side to side. The lead singer and vocalist, Dawson Daughterty interacted with the crowd and had them sing back to him, creating an even more fun atmosphere. With a 1-hour long set, they played a few of their most popular hits, including β€œsunburn” and β€œcough drops” that really got the crowd hyped up and ready for Saint Motel’s set. Almost Monday’s style of music really captures that β€œI don’t have to worry about anything” mindset and free-spirit that people have. It also feels kind of like a coming of age discography in which their songs are perfect for a roadtrip or even just chilling with your friends.

After the opening set, adrenaline and energy already up, Saint Motel came out and brought more to the crowd. This set was curated with countless instruments, from various guitars, to drums, to trumpets, to saxophones, and even a piano! The members were all on stage just having a good time, it became more of a jam session with us rather than just seeing us as an audience watching them perform. This made it all the more personal and really encapsulated the feel and vibe of their music. For a more classical style, however, with their own take on it, they brought out the piano and played their track, β€œFor Elise”. This song is their rendition of the original β€œFur Elise” by Beethoven. It includes the piano melody and creates a more modern and groovy version of the song which was very popular amongst the Creighton student-filled crowd as they danced and swayed their foam glowsticks back and forth.

What a great way to end the week and spend a Friday night, just having a great time not worrying about anything else in the presence of fellow students and immaculate music and vibes. Even if the students did not know the artists, they came out of that theater fully enjoying the experience. The yearly Fallapalooza always brings smiles across the board and will always remain a widely loved tradition
