Amidst the comforts of Creighton, it’s easy to forget about the daily struggles of other nations. With passionate student volunteers like Arts & Sciences sophomore Ellie Cusic, we are reminded and given the opportunity to help others in need. Cusic is putting on a benefit concert on April 11 at 8 p.m. in Becker Hall for the suffering children and nation of Uganda through Invisible Children, Inc.
“My main goal is for people to become interested,” Cusic said. “It’s an amazing cause and organization.”
The organization aims to bring awareness and aid to those affected by the war in northern Uganda, which has been called the most neglected humanitarian emergency in the world today. The people of Uganda have been forced to move from their homes and communities because of the war taking place between the government and the Lord’s Resistance Army, which continues to kidnap children and make them work as child soldiers.
Drummer Benjamin Schaefer and his band, We the Living, will be headlining this event. Cusic and Schaefer hope to open the eyes of Creighton students and bring about permanent change and lasting peace for the children of Uganda where poverty, disease and starvation are commonplace.
“It’s a huge genocide with countless child soldiers,” Cusic said. “I hope for students to become educated through music.”
Tickets can be purchased for $4 on the mall or $5 at the door. All funds from tickets sales will go directly to the Invisible Children and 10 percent of We the Living’s merchandise sold will go to the fund. More information can be found on flyers and by joining the Facebook group for this event.
