With history on the line, the Bluejays were able to dominate their opponent and come out the victors.
Creighton University’s women’s tennis team set a new school record by winning its 10th straight match on Tuesday, as it beat the University of Nebraska-Omaha 7-0.
Coach Tom Lilly mentioned the match’s historical significance to the team before the match began, but also made sure to remind everyone to focus on the day’s match instead of the streak.
“His key priority is to encourage us to fight hard in our matches and play to the highest level we can attain,” sophomore Lauren Mastro said. “It is not about the winning streak itself, but the training and tenacity that helped us reach this point in the first place.”
The team was aware of the importance of the match, but managed to stay focused on the match instead of the streak.
“Our team did talk about how we needed to stay focused and support each other for this match because we knew we were tied with the old record and we definitely had the motivation to break that record,” freshman Kelsey Schmidt said.
The winning streak started over spring break, as the Jays went 6-0 in four days at Orlando, Fla. Of the six wins, the Jays managed five shutouts.
“I believe a lot of players on the team began to hit their strides over spring break as we started to get deeper into our schedule,” Mastro said. “Especially in doubles, each team has learned how to meld their individual games and move better and communicate as a unit.”
Schmidt also believes that the wins over spring break may have given the team confidence, which has helped it to continue being victorious.
The team is also very close, which helps with the continued success.
“I think our team chemistry is great,” junior Tess Reddin said. “We play better because we like playing together. Our personalities are compatible with each other. Doubles is all about teamwork and communication.”
Schmidt can also feel the support from her teammates, as she leads the team with a 10-match winning streak.
“It’s really great to have such a supportive team, and I’m really just happy to be a part of it,” Schmidt said.
Her streak is one match ahead of Reddin and freshmen Mary Pat McMullan and Nicole Nakaoka who each have nine-match winning streaks.
The team has eight matches left this spring season before the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, which is April 24-26 in Omaha.
With so many different opponents coming up, everyone is looking forward to the different matches for different reasons. However, Evansville is one that was pretty popular.
“Over Easter break, we travel to Indiana to play Evansville,” Reddin said. “This match will be a close for everyone on the team. I will also play a girl from my hometown, so personally I know my opponent well and she is definitely a competitive individual that I have to play well to win.”
Mastro is also looking forward to the Evansville matchup, hoping to make up for last year’s outcome.
“I am looking forward to the Evansville match because they are a strong team that we lost to last year, but hope to beat this year,” she said.
“If everyone does her part, then it will be a good match for us, and we will hopefully emerge the victors.”
