When the women’s basketball team faced the Saint Louis University Billikens last season, they were 0-3 and in search of their first win of the season. This season the Bluejays are 4-1 and are looking to improve their home record to 4-0 when the Billikens come to Omaha on Friday.
The Bluejays are 1-0 against the Billikens, having played them for the first time last season.
“They are a bigger team this year; they have a 6’4″ player who is averaging 17 points a game,” head coach Jim Flanery said. “We have to find a way to negate their size advantage and that is something we are going to work on this week in practice.”
The Bluejays are coming off a momentous win over UC Davis last weekend in California.
“The win will not really have an effect on our play against SLU,” senior guard Chevelle Herring said. “We’re not going to use that and ignore the preparation for the next team.”
Creighton is averaging nearly 69 points per game while opponents are only averaging approximately 59 against them.
Yet, the Bluejays are struggling in second halves this season, often scoring fewer points than the opponent.
The Billikens are coming off a comeback win over Arkansas State on their home court at Chaifetz Arena, led by senior center Amanda Kemezys who led the team in rebounds with 19.
Kemezys also led SLU to a win against Montana with a career-high 26 points in the Courtyard by Marriot LA Westside Thanksgiving Classic.
In the recent win over Arkansas State, five players scored in double figures along with two players recording double-doubles.
“Our intention is to build on our home momentum and that will be an emphasis,” Flanery said. “We need to be able to play hard enough and well enough so we can use the crowd and the band to our advantage.”
The Bluejays will look to improve their play and continue their success on Friday.
Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m. at the D.J. Sokol Arena.
