Jesuit Volunteer Corps Recruits at Creighton

After graduation, students ponder what to do with their lives. Not ready to actively search for a job in a jobless economy, students often look to volunteer in places around the world, serving others and learning more about themselves in the process.

The Jesuit Volunteer Corps is one option. The Corps has 32 domestic cities and seven countries around the world. Unlike other volunteer programs, the JVC doesn’t cost money, and students receive a stipend while working abroad.

The Jesuit Volunteer Corps first started in Copper Valley, Alaska in 1956. At that time the sponsorship was by the Oregon Province of Jesuits.

Now, the Jesuit Volunteer Corps is all over the United States, and the strong history and tradition draws in new volunteers.

Kelly Harbison, the central recruiter, came to Creighton Nov. 16 through 18, to meet with students and explain how they can become involved. After College, Kelly herself joined the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, and had a great year of work experience.

“I built so many relationships over the year, and that was definitely the most important thing I learned,” Harbison said. “That and re-evaluating the things that are important to me.”

Harbison spent her year volunteering in Maine, and really enjoyed the work she was doing. She was drawn into the Jesuit Volunteer Corps because of its rich history and tradition, and still feels strongly about the organization.

Those who want to apply must first complete an online application. In addition, students are to submit four letters of recommendation, college transcripts and get a complete physical from a doctor.

The Jesuit Volunteer Corps is intentionally counter-cultural, Harbison said. It is important for people to realize how society defines success, and what true success is. The trips are not only very unique, but they are rewarding as well.
