Shanahan enjoys his place on bench

The Qwest is sold out, fans are roaring and it’s five minutes before tip-off.

The Creighton men’s basketball team huddles together in the tunnel, soaking up words of wisdom from team chaplain the Rev. Tom Shanahan, S.J.

In these minutes before the game, Shanahan calms their jittery nerves by blessing the team and praying for a victorious outcome. Moments later, the Jays charge out of the tunnel and the game begins.

Shanahan has been the chaplain for five years and has been at Creighton for more than 35. He works with the men’s team at all home games and travels to some road games. He sits at the end of the bench and huddles up with players and coaches during time-outs and at halftime.

His presence extends to chapel with the team on game day and during individual meetings with players to offer spiritual or other guidance.

“I look to bring support to the team as a Jesuit presence to the players and coaches. I hope during the time I speak to them before the game, it brings a calmness so they can go out and perform their best,” Shanahan said.

Players and coaches appreciate his presence before and during the games.

“Father is a big part of the team’s routine,” said Cavel Witter, a senior guard. “He puts a spiritual perspective on things that is motivating.”

Many players on the team have a personal connection with Shanahan.

“Father brings a relaxing tone during such an anxious time,” Witter said. “He is a big part of the team. He is at every home game and is the backbone of the team.”

Shanahan calls his job as team chaplain a privilege.

“There are no downsides to my job. I love getting to know the guys and being able to help them,” Shanahan said.

His connection to the players extends beyond their time in a Creighton basketball uniform. He sometimes gets the call to celebrate the wedding of a previous player.

“Coach Altman reinforces to the guys on the team that they are so lucky to have such a great support system within the Jesuit community,” Shanahan said.

Shanahan also can be found on the sidelines for the women’s basketball team and the men’s soccer team. Being chaplain for three sports keeps him busy, but he is also involved in other Creighton activities and organizations. He teaches theology, is the chaplain for the Dental School, works with University Relations and with alumni chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu, the Jesuit honor society.

Shanahan is true blue to Creighton.

“I love it here. This is my home. I do not see myself leaving,” he said. “The faculty and students are so great. It is a real enjoyment being at Creighton.”
