Job Market Slump, Gain an Edge through Apple Training Center

The job market has become a dark hallway, full of locked doors for students. It is increasingly difficult to find a fulfilling and rewarding job after Creighton. The journalism department hopes to change this, with the addition of the Apple Training Center.

The Apple Training Center will offer certifications in Final Cut Pro, and later more programs in the Apple Suite, that will allow students to have advantage over others in the tough job market.

“Even business students could benefit from knowing this software,” said Joel Davies, director of the journalism graphic design program. “When applying for a job, students who have this certification will jump to the top of the pile of applicants for sure.”

In addition to this, Davies said students only pay $150 to take the exam at the end of a training course, whereas the commercial cost for professionals to come to Creighton is around $1,500.

“That price difference is substantial, and I am really thinking about signing up for a class next semester,” said David Dann, Business junior. “I feel as though this extra preparation can really help me when searching for a job come next spring.”

Students, in order to complete the certification, should sign up for the correlating class through the journalism department, and at the end of semester, they will earn certification.

When applying for a job, businesses often ask about certain programs that the applicant is comfortable using. With the Apple Training Center, there is tangible proof that the applicant is ready to use the software with minimal training.

Three professors are certified to teach these courses, including convergent technology coordinator Angie Shield, journalism associate professor Tim Guthrie and Davies. Except for the facility at Creighton, the closest certification centers are in Chicago or Denver.

Creighton’s center will service professionals as well as students in a large area of the country.

The training center also helps subsidize some of the technology costs that the journalism department has incurred. It has many top-of-the-line computers, but the costs of keeping them up-to-date are obviously high.

The Apple Training Center is a way for students to gain an edge in the competitive job market, and to shine light on the currently dark situation. More information regarding the courses offered can be found on the Creighton Web site, or by contacting Joel Davies at [email protected].
