Creighton remembers Syndey Jones

Business senior Sydney Jones died on Thursday around 10 a.m. She collapsed on campus Monday and was transported to Creighton University Medical Center.

Doctors discovered that a pulmonary embolism had traveled through her heart and lungs, causing damage. She underwent immediate surgery but suffered from complications that required her to be placed on a heart-lung assist machine.

On Wedenesday at 6:30 p.m., friends and classmates gathered in St. John’s Church in a rosary service.

About 25 members of the Creighton community attended the service. Several faculty led the service, including business professor Tim Bastian, Dr. John Cernech and the Rev. Bert Thelen, S.J. A rosary service was simultaneously held at Jones’ parish in Sioux Falls, S.D., her hometown.

“I was deeply moved by Sydney’s family and their faith,” said the Rev. Andy Alexander, S.J., in an e-mail. “They clearly loved her and each other deeply . . . I was also moved by our students, friends of Sydney, who were up at the hospital each day and night, saying the rosary, comforting the family and supporting one another with their faith.”

A pulmonary embolism is a medical condition in which one or more arteries in the lungs become blocked.

Jones’ family and friends declined to comment. They ask that people keep the Jones family in their prayers.

A visitation will be held on Sunday at St. Lambert’s Catholic Church in Sioux Falls and a Christian wake will follow. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Lambert’s.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorials be sent to:

Sydney Anne Jones Memorial Fund

Catholic Foundation of Eastern South Dakota

523 N. Duluth Ave.

Sioux Falls, S.D., 57104

In addition, Creighton University will be holding a prayer service in Jones’ honor on Monday, Feb. 8 at 5 p.m. in St. John’s church. The Rev. Bert Thelen, S.J., will preside over the service.
