On Sept. 18, students will have a reason to get up (relatively) early. Creighton’s eighth annual Jaywalk will take place Saturday at 9 a.m. to benefit the Jesuit Middle School in North Omaha.
In 2003, Creighton celebrated its 125th anniversary, and the Creighton Students Union decided to put on an event that focused on students, “hence the creation of Jaywalk,” said CSU supervisor Michelle Starzyk. She is in her eighth year working on Jaywalk.
Since its start in 2003, more than $49,830 has been raised for the Jesuit Middle School. There is a $25 registration fee for students and a $35 registration fee for non-students. Those proceeds have created scholarships for the students at the Jesuit Middle School and have helped replace their gym floor.
“It’s a great event that goes to a great cause,” said Business sophomore and Jaywalk coordinator Shane Beasley. “It’s an event that can only happen if Creighon’s community participates.”
The Jaywalk’s 3.1 miles stretch across North Downtown and through Creighton’s campus, and there is a pancake feed afterwards.
“Whether you run or walk, it’s a great way to be part of the Omaha community, to help raise money for fourth to eighth graders seeking a Jesuit education and to get some exercise,” Starzyk said. “Did I also mention there’s a pancake feed after the race at Morrison with the JMS students and their families?”
