Campus breakfast options increase

Whether you’re looking for a warm alternative to that bland granola bar or just need a more convenient way to fit in the most important meal of the day, Wareham Court now offers quick and hearty breakfast options that are sure to carry you over to lunch.

The breakfast menu, which has been available in Skutt since the beginning of the semester, features items like the bacon and cheese breakfast burrito and the sausage egg o’ muffin. Sodexo, the only food retailer on campus, decided to add the breakfast menu after results from a dining survey indicated that students and faculty were interested in having a hot breakfast available in a location other than the dining halls.

“We asked, we listened and we acted on what we had heard,” Wes Muncy, general manager for campus services, said. “I selected the particular items on the menu because they are delicious, portable and can easily be eaten on-the-go.”

The items are made fresh every day and are served from 7-10 a.m. on weekdays. Muncy said the most popular items are the breakfast burritos and the English muffin sandwiches. All items are affordably priced at less than $5 and can be purchased with JayBucks, Dining Dollars, credit cards or cash.

“Breakfast at Wareham Court is intended to be an option for those students not on a meal plan and faculty and staff who want a hot breakfast once they get to campus,” Amber Bruyere, marketing specialist for Creighton University Dining

Services, said.

Currently, the breakfast menu is being served on a trial basis until spring break, at which point the Dining Services staff will evaluate whether there is enough interest in the menu. So far, Bruyere said the menu has been attracting close to 100 people per week and that those numbers need to continue to increase in order to keep the breakfast open long-term.

Even though the numbers may presently not be up to the level desired by Dining Services, students and faculty have expressed positive feedback about the convenience and taste of this alternative breakfast option.

“[It’s] totally delicious,” said Kate Lansu, an Arts & Sciences senior. “Maybe not healthy for every day, but a nice pick-me-up, especially in this cold weather.”

Wareham Court’s breakfast menu is one of two noticeable additions to the retail food service in Skutt. The sushi bar, which opened last semester, has been quite a crowd-pleaser, and its success is promising for the long-term survival of Wareham Court’s breakfast menu. Muncy said Campus Services has also been discussing plans to open other retail food locations on campus in the future to give students and faculty more choices.

“We have had discussions with the University about a few other platforms that have been successful in the campus world,” Muncy said. “We will continue to discuss our options with the University and look for opportunities to keep the food offerings fresh at Wareham Court.

“There are space and budget limitations that will have an impact on what we are able to do and how quickly we are able to bring about change.”
