“Shadows” displays students’ artwork and writing talents

Can’t get enough of β€œArrested Development?” You may have to wait a little bit more.

But, in the meantime, check out β€œA-Rusted Development,” a play on the name of the hit comedy and the cover illustration for this year’s issue of β€œShadows Magazine,” Creighton’s student-run literary art magazine. Β

The inspiration for the pieceβ€”the natural deterioration of things over timeβ€”may remind some of the fall of the formerly wealthy and habitually dysfunctional Bluth family from the show, though there is no connection.

β€œThis piece shows the natural decay of paint bucketsΒ that were once used for restoration,” said Madeline Forthmann, an artist and College of Arts & Sciences freshman.

Forthmann, a painter and photographer, worked on β€œA-Rusted Development” during AP Studio Art last year before submitting it for the spring issue of β€œShadows,” which came out this week.

The literary art magazine received 80 student submissions this year and narrowed it down to the very best artwork, short stories and poetry for publication.

β€œThis year’s issue has a lot of great poetry and short stories and photography,” said Elizabeth Johnson, co-editor of the magazine. β€œThere isn’t an overarching theme however because we don’t want to limit what can be submitted for publication.”

The traditionally bi-annual publication was first published in 1922 but paper shortage during WWII pushed the magazine out of print until 1963. In recent years, a spring issue has been printed.

For her first issue, Forthmann is publishing two pieces, β€œA-Rusted Development” and β€œKnot Home.”

β€œItΒ feelsΒ amazingΒ andΒ it’sΒ suchΒ anΒ honor,” Forthman said. β€œIΒ cannotΒ waitΒ toΒ seeΒ howΒ itΒ turnsΒ outΒ andΒ seeΒ everyoneΒ else’sΒ works.”

Johnson, the co-editor, appreciates the talents of Creighton students.

β€œPersonally, I entered Creighton with the intent to go into publishing and even though I changed my mind about that several years ago, I couldn’t walk away from the opportunity to share the amazing talents of Creighton writers and artists with the campus,” Johnson said.

Students can submit up to two pieces per semester by emailing them to [email protected].Β

The magazine can be found in residence halls and other public areas around campus.Β
