Medical school match day

Creighton University recently held it’s annual medical school match day where students in the School of Medicine learned which residency programs with which they were matched.

β€œMatch Day was an emotionally charged day for my classmates and me. It was really great to spend the morning with my class, and learn where everyone will be going for residency,” fourth year medical student Sarah Bly said. β€œEveryone has worked so hard for the four years leading up to Match Day, which makes the day pretty special.”

According to the associate dean for student affairs at Creighton’s School of Medicine, Michael G. Kavan, Ph.D. said a total of 138 students were matched to programs in 30 states including California, Arizona, Minnesota

and Nebraska.

Students were matched with some of the most prestigious programs, including, but not limited to, Creighton University, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, UCLA, Emory, Stanford, Duke and Harvard.

β€œMatch day was pretty crazy, so much work and anticipation had gone into the process and it then it was finally over,” said Janel Brink who will be heading to Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ for Obstetrics-Gynecology. β€œMy family was able to come down to Phoenix, and it was fun to share the day with them.”

Kavan reported that 95% of students matched into their specialty of choice.

β€œThis year’s match was one of our best ever,” Kavan said.

The highest-matched specialty areas were pediatrics, internal medicine, family medicine, general surgery, psychiatry, anesthesiology, obstetrics and gynecology and emergency medicine. The list can be seen on Creighton’s public relations website.

β€œI am so excited to be starting my pediatrics residency training this summer and was absolutely thrilled when I opened the envelope and saw that I will be going to the Medical University of South Carolina,” Bly said.

According to Creighton’s public relations website 131 students were in the National Resident Matching Program, two in the San Francisco Match, one in the American Urological Association Match and four in the Military Match. This was the highest number ever of Creighton medical students participating in the match.
