CU embraces new email

Earlier this week Creighton announced the availability of the NewCUmail for students.

According to an email from DoIt, the NewCUmail, or Office 365, features a mailbox size increase, more online storage, and multiple free downloads of Microsoft Office for full time students.

Some students have already completed the transition to the new email, including AK Satpathy, a College of Arts & Sciences junior, who switched over last Thursday.

β€œIΒ absolutelyΒ love it. It took some getting used to though. The green line that symbolizes unopened mail is weird,” said Satpathy. β€œWith the excess space, we as students can be more lazy and not delete mail.”

Tadd Martin is the project manager for the NewCUmail project. As project manager Martin identifies requirements, schedules technical resources, and coordinates internal and external communication.

Martin believes that the greatest benefit of the NewCUMail is the increased storage space.

β€œThe benefits are 25GB of email storage space, collaborative online storage, and web versions of Office applications. Students currently have 150mb of email storage space. The NewCUmail offers over 25GB of email storage, which is over 16,000 times the current email space,” said Martin. β€œThe NewCUmail is powered by Office365 which provides additional benefits including online storage-similar to Google Drive, and web based Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.”

All of these benefits of the New CUMail could not be found on the older version of the program and students are enthusiastic about the changes.

β€œWe have conducted feedback sessions for early adopters. From those feedback sessions we have received a lot of positive feedback such as β€˜Migration went very smoothly. No problems, everyone did a great job,’ β€˜Able to send much larger attachments,’ β€˜I had no issues migrating to Office 365,’ said Martin. β€œWe have also received feedback from Facebook and Twitter.Β Such as, β€˜This is better than Christmas,’ β€˜Nothing from my email was missing,’ β€˜Best thing ever,’ β€˜If you don’t have it yet, you’re crazy.’ β€œ

Students are encouraged to migrate to opt-in to the upgraded email as soon as possible so that they are able to experience the benefits that are only found in the new program.

Β Martin encourages students to carefully review the information on the Opt-in the pages. Found at: http://newcumail.creighton.edu .

β€œThe most important piece of information are the changes to the login procedure. Students need to pay attention to the instructions that are provided when they go through the Opt-In process,” said Martin.

Creighton recommends students choose to Opt-In now as the more students that Opt-in will result in fewer people having to be systematically scheduled for migration later.

The NewCUmail is being offered initially to Creighton students. A migration plan for faculty and staff is currently under development. Martin is very excited about this project as he’s been able to work on a project that will help so many students with the services that will be provided by Office 365 because NewCUmail provides benefits for the entire Creighton University community.

DoIt is encouraging students to provide them feedback about their transition to the new email though social media. DoIt’s twitter handle is β€œ@CreightonDoIT β€œ and their acebook user name is β€œCreightonDoIT.”

For help and questions with this migration process, students may contact the DoIT4Students Service Desk at 402-280-1111, option 2 or email [email protected].
