Pharrell Williams speaks to women in G I R L

In the last month, Pharrell Williams has made a surge into the national spotlight with the release of his new album.

G I R L, which debuted March 3 through Columbia Records and β€œI Am Other,” Williams’ YouTube channel and cultural movement, has hit the market and has been generating well-received praise. The album contains 10 songs with collaborations with high-profile artists like Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Daft Punk and Alicia Keys.

Despite nearly eight years since his last released album, β€œIn My Mind,” back in 2006, Pharrell is excited about the final product.

β€œMy music is so much bigger than me,” Pharrell said in an interview with The Guardian.

The album is themed to be geared about women and feminism with songs including β€œMarilyn Monroe,” β€œCome Get It Bae,” β€œLost Queen” and β€œIt Girl.” Pharrell wanted to highlight gender imbalance in society.

β€œIt’s my ode to women because they have been so good to me,” he said to the Hindustan Times. β€œMy album is about the appreciation for women.”

One song off the album, which he released as a single back in Nov. 2013, is the critically acclaimed song β€œHappy.” The song appeared in the hit movie β€œDespicable Me 2” and has been well-received in reviews and the media. Pharrell has been making frequent appearances at award shows and commercials performing the song over the past months.

The album as a whole is good. Rolling Stone gave it four out of five stars with a general consensus of the album being favorable. It reached number two on the Billboard 200 and top five in several countries.
