It’s too soon for the Jays to think about Thanksgiving. Although they travel to Orlando, Fla., on Nov. 26, 27 and 29 to compete in the Old Spice Classic, they aren’t looking too far ahead.
“We’ll worry about that next week,” head coach Dana Altman said when asked about the tournament. “It’s a work in progress.”
Before heading to Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, Creighton has some matters to take care of at home. The Jays take a 1-1 record into this Sunday’s game against Arkansas-Little Rock.
Tuesday’s 78-53 win against Florida A&M gave them a boost, but it and last weekend’s loss to No. 21 Dayton showed them a few things to work on.
Creighton was outrebounded by both the Flyers and the Rattlers. The Jays shot 48.3 percent against Dayton but only 43.3 percent against Florida A&M.
“We’ve got a long ways to go,” Altman said of the Dayton game. “We came up short, exposed some deficiencies.”
The Jays will need to shore up those deficiencies before the Old Spice Classic. They take on No. 15 Michigan on Thanksgiving Day, and their other two opponents will be determined from among Marquette, Xavier, Alabama, Baylor, Iona and Florida State. Both Xavier and Florida State received votes in this week’s Top 25 poll.
“We’re going to have to rebound well,” Altman said. “The defense is going to have to make great strides.”
Creighton has not traveled out of Nebraska for Thanksgiving while the current Bluejays have been on the team. They aren’t sure how they’ll celebrate the holiday or if they’ll be able to visit Disney World.
“Coach doesn’t give us too much time,” junior forward Casey Harriman said. “We might get a couple hours here and there to walk around close to the hotel. Once the tournament’s over, we have a little bit of time to have fun.”
Even if the trip entails mostly basketball, the players are looking forward to the new experience.
“I’m excited to play over Thanksgiving,” freshman forward Ethan Wragge said. “Growing up in Minnesota, with the Big Ten, I’m excited to play Michigan.”
