Jays lose to rival

The Creighton baseball team suffered a tough defeat at the hands of the UNO Mavericks Tuesday night.

The Mavs rallied late to overcome a 2-0 deficit and win the game 3-2 at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. The loss was Creighton’s fourth in a row, dropping the Bluejays to 11-11 this season.

Despite the string of tough decisions, the Creighton players are remaining optimistic.

β€œIn order to turn this around, we just gotta keep our heads up,” junior pitcher Nick Musec

said. The highlight for Creighton was the pitching of Musec. He struck out five batters while pitching a little over five scoreless innings. Musec only allowed three hitters to reach base, giving up two hits and one hit-by-pitch.

β€œNick did exactly what we wanted him to do,” head coach Ed Servais said. β€œWe ask our starters to go out there and put us in a situation to win, and that’s what he did.”

The game was scoreless until the sixth inning, when Creighton was first to get on the board. After a sacrifice bunt by senior infielder Chance Ross, sophomore outfielder Brad McKewon hit a sacrifice fly to bring in a run. Senior infielder Nick Judkins drove in the Bluejays other run in the inning, giving Creighton a 2-0 lead.

By the eighth inning, the Mavericks were up 3-2 and in control for the rest of the ball game. Senior pitcher Reese McGraw took the loss after allowing two runs in two innings. McGraw moves to 2-3 on the year.

Despite the unfortunate result, the players were excited about starting a new rivalry with the team from across town.

β€œThe energy in the stadium was great the entire game,” Musec said. β€œTonight, things didn’t work out for us, but we’ll try to get them next time.”

The Creighton baseball team will host Evansville in a three game series this weekend. The first game will begin at 6:00 p.m. Fri. at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
