Pharmacy school shows Creighton’s got talent

A majority of CreightonΒ students are familiar with the special programs and events that go on through out the year with the help of organizations such as Program Board and Street Team.Β  One of the main events during the spring semester is CU’s Got Talent.

The Pharmacy School’s Creighton’s Got Talent event will take place in the School of Pharmacy on Tuesday, January 29th over lunch.Β  This year marks the only second year of this event but the professors and students in the Pharmacy School are excited to see where β€œCreighton’s Got Talent” can take the Pharmacy School in the future.

In the School of PharmacyΒ however β€œCreighton’s Got Talent” is not ran by Program Board, nor does it consist of students singing, playing guitar or reading slam poetry to a live audience.Β  Instead,Β it isΒ a video contest to promote prospective students to join the program and hear insight from current pharmacy students.

Β

β€œStudents submit videos highlighting what they feel the strengths of Creighton are and we have a judging panel of 3 that picks the winners at the viewing party,” said Kelly Nystrom, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice.

Β

Highlighted is the 2-program pathway, with videos discussing both the campus and distance programs.Β  Other students discussed what factors determined why they chose to attend Creighton. These videos were also very helpful in allowing potential students to see the family oriented atmosphere of Creighton.

Pharmacy student and Phi Lamda Sigma representitive, Ken Cai feels Creighton is a wonderful school to attend because of its community.

β€œIn the Creighton Community, each person is respected for his or her unique circumstances and concerns.Β  It offers an extraordinary academic environment, diverse community, and a promising future that demonstrates these traits,” Cai said. “We just want potential students to see that,”

Alongside Nystrom, Senior Associate Dean of the school of Pharmacy and Health Professions, Victoria Roche was able to make this event possible.Β  In 2011, Roche’s colleagues approached her with idea of making a recruitment video competition possible.Β  Since then, she has directly worked with the Dean’s Office, and other professors in allowing prizes for the winners, as well as selecting the video winners.

β€œTuition discount scholarships for first, second and third place winners from each pathway were secured to stimulate pharmacy student interest in the competition,” Roche said.Β “I’m hopeful that this year’s competition will generate significant interest among the pharmacy student population, and that we’ll see several high quality submissions as a result.”
