The Creighton women’s tennis team overpowered Bradley University 5-2 in its final home match of the season at the Hanscom Tennis Center.

The Lady Jays claimed their first win in the Missouri Valley Conference over Bradley this last Saturday as the team’s only senior, Anna Kirshenbaum, sealed the deal on one of her final singles matches, 6-0, 6-1.

The matches started with the sophomore duo, Jennie Hartjes and Amanda Noonan, claiming their doubles match as well as another pair of Jays, freshman Sam Anderson and sophomore Liz Vermillion, giving Creighton that one point head start on the Braves.

β€œI thought that we came out strong in doubles, and continued to compete well in singles,” sophomore Jennie Hartjes said.

After Kirshenbaum took the first win in singles, junior Analese Snyder closely followed with another victory with a 6-2, 6-0 verdict over the Braves’ Sarah Rodefeld. After another win by Hartjes in singles and Creighton was ahead 3-0. Bradley picked up two singles points against Noonan and Vermillion, but Creighton pulled out the game at 5-2.

So far so good for our tennis team as they had been looking forward to the beginning of the MVC tournament and claiming this first win in the conference only encourages the team to continue a winning streak.

β€œI’m excited for what the rest of the season will bring because I know it will be a challenge, but we are a competitive team and have the skills to do well,” sophomore Taylor Koehrsen said.

Even with this being Kirshenbaum’s final year on the team, head coach Tom Lilly believes that the Jays have a lot of potential and will continue on for greatness next year.

β€œWe have a talented group of players and … I can see this team having a lot of success,” Lilly said.

The Jays close out the regular season this weekend. On Saturday, the Jays travel to Carbondale to face the first place Southern Illinois University Salukis. On Sunday, Creighton will head to Evansville University for the final match of the MVC season.
