Club is ‘Ultimate’ sportsmanship display

Creighton’s Ultimate Frisbee Club is focused on having fun, staying in shape and, most importantly, preserving the spirit ofΒ  the game.

Ultimate may seem far from your ordinary sport since it does not rely on officials. Instead, it is officiated by the players themselves. The players are responsible for keeping the game fair and calling their own fouls. Arts & Sciences senior John Brennan said the spirit of the game is the main reason he has kept playing overΒ  the years.

β€œThe sport is really, really competitive; however no one is willing to sacrifice the spirit of the sport for the score at the end of the game,” Brennan said.

Business senior Dominic Antonelli, the club’s president, said the culture of the sport is the greatest part of the game. He said this is especially noticeable when they travel to tournaments and meet players fromΒ  other schools.

β€œThe people I’ve met all have the same culture behind them: everyone just wants to have fun; winning is just a bonus,”  Antonelli said.

The Ultimate season consists of traveling and participating in tournaments across the Midwest. The team normally plays about seven games in a tournament, and most of the tournaments are out of state. This year, the team is playing in tournaments in Chicago; Lawrence, Kan.; Lincoln andΒ  Winona, Minn.

Signing up for these tournaments and organizing travel plans is no easy task since this club is entirely student run. Brennan said he has a ton of respect for the students that run the club, and he realizes all the hard work they put in.

β€œIt’s not easy getting a group of 25 guys to another city, signed up for a tournament and taking care of transportation and lodging for everyone,” Brennan said. β€œThey’re also responsible for designing, ordering and purchasing uniforms which is never aΒ  simple feat.”

Another unusual tradition is that most Ultimate teams come up with their own nickname. Brennan said he only knows of one college that actually uses the school’s mascot. The Ultimate team on Creighton’s campus is known as the Creighton β€œTuskers.”

The members of the Creighton Tuskers consist of both genders, and most members have never played the sport before coming to Creighton. Business sophomore Seth Johnson is one of the current members who had no prior experience. Johnson has learned a brand new sport and said he has only had positive experiences with the club.

β€œUltimate here at Creighton has seen its ups and downs, but we always have a really good time,” Johnson said. β€œThis year has been one of our best so far.”

Brennan has been involved in the club for four years now. He said he has had a blast playing for the team and has met a bunch of great friends along the way.

β€œPlaying Ultimate with these guys has been the best highlight of my four years at Creighton,” Brennan said. β€œI can’t wait to watch what they do in future tournaments as our freshman class is making big plays to be a major Ultimate team come 2017.”
