Home runs power Hoyas past Jays

The Georgetown Hoyas used the long-ball to earn a three-game sweep of the Bluejay softball team. Georgetown defeated Creighton 6-1 on Sunday and 5-2 and 6-3 on Saturday.

The Hoyas had a total of six home runs in the three-game series.

Georgetown got to senior pitcher Becca Changstrom early on Sunday. After a leadoff walk, Hannah Slovacek laced an RBI double down the left-field line to plate the first run of the ball game. Changstrom escaped any further damage, striking out the final two Hoya hitters with runners at the corners.

Changstrom was a strike away from sitting Georgetown down in order in the second, but Gabriela Elvina lifted the senior’s 1-2 delivery over the left-centerfield wall to extend the Hoyas’ lead to 3-0.

β€œ[Georgetown] was seeing the ball pretty well,” head coach Brent Vigness said. β€œThey weren’t fooled by what Becca was throwing. That’s as hard as Becca’s been hit in a while and I give credit to Georgetown for hitting her well.”

Offensively, Creighton was unable to answer the Hoyas’ outpour as the first seven Jays failed to reach base. Sophomore centerfielder Kelsey Allender’s bunt single in the third produced Creighton’s first baserunner.Β

Junior catcher Bri Lingl helped the Jays offensive get rolling in the fifth. The junior hit a solo home run over the left field wall to trim the Hoyas’ lead to three.

β€œI just wanted to get our team going,” Lingl said. β€œA hit, especially a home run, gets our team going and [it was] followed up by another hit after that; so I think it [the home run] did spark something.”

The spark sputterd, however, as Lingl’s round-tripper proved to be the only scoring for the Jays.

Senior utility player Alexis Cantu followed Lingl with a single to right and Allender picked up another bunt single to put two on with only one out, but Georgetown’s Megan Hyson clamped down and worked out of trouble with only a one-spot in the inning.

Senior Brittany Telecky relieved Changstrom in the circle in fourth and held the Hoyas off the scoreboard until the seventh inning when Georgetown tacked on two more in the top of the seventh via the road squad’s third homer of the game.

β€œBrit came in and did a really nice job,” Vigness said. β€œShe gave up the one home run, but basically anything up in the air to [left] field today was going to carry … they didn’t hit any hard balls off of her except that one.”

Alessandra Gargicevich-Almei belted a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to account for the Hoyas’ second of three home runs Sunday.

On Saturday, the Jays held leads in both games, but Georgetown found ways to pull out a pair of victories.

The Jays led 3-1 heading to the top of the seventh inning of game two, but Georgetown used a late rally to spoil Creighton’s victory dance.

With the bases loaded, Hyson singled through the left side to plate the second Hoya run of the game.

On the next pitch, Samantha Giovanniello belted Cantu’s delivery over centerfield for a grand slam, giving Georgetown aΒ  three-run cushion.

The Bluejays got two runners on base in the home half of the seventh, but were unable to cut into Georgetown’s three-run lead.

In the opening game, senior outfielder Ellen Homan gave the Jays a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third, but Georgetown responded with a solo home run and a two-RBI double to retake the lead.

The Hoyas tacked on another run in the sixth with their second solo home run ofΒ  the game. Creighton traveled to Lincoln Wednesday to face the in-state rival Cornhuskers.

The Jays host the Villanova Wildcats Saturday and Sunday for a three-game Big East series.
