We Matter Walk: Walk for change

Earth Day is an annual event that is celebrated on April 22 worldwide to show support for environmental protection. It is important for the Creighton community to be aware of the pressing issue of climate change.

To help raise awareness during National Earth Week, the Creighton Center for Service and Justice and the Creighton Greenjays are sponsoring the β€œWe Matter Walk”.

The β€œWe Matter Walk” will take place April 25, 2014 from 3 p.m to 5 p.m. The goal of the event is to help celebrate Earth Week and promote climate change awareness. Β Β

Jessica Sheldon, the Creighton Greenjays president, explained that students should be involved in climate awareness events such as the β€œWe Matter Walk”.

β€œAs students at Creighton University, we are committed to integrating the jesuit values that embody ecological responsibility and social justice into our everyday lives.”

Sheldon goes on to explain, β€œWe should live out such values through being stewards of the land and understanding the consequences of our actions on a local and global scale. We should address current problems facing our society through changing our own behavior in order to create sustainable solutions.”

Researchers have warned for years that large, abrupt and widespread climate changes have been occurring and that human interaction is one of the primary causes of these changes. The goal of the We Matter Walk is to promote climate change awareness and to show that younger generations and especially the Creighton community, have a voice on this issue.

This year will be the second annual β€œWe Matter Walk” event at Creighton University.Β  Hannah Mullally, vice president of the Creighton Greenjays encourages students to be a part of the event and to β€œhave their voice be heard”.

β€œIt is important to let the world know that our generation is concerned with an issue like climate change. Students have immense power to facilitate change. Plus, it will be a really fun time to take a study break with food, music, and outdoor activities,” Mullally said.
