Bluejays softball falls to Butler

The tough losses seem to be getting tougher as the Bluejays lose the series finale to Butler. The Creighton Bluejays had the hopes to take this third game and move up in the Big East standings as the conference tournament creeps closer every day. However, Butler had other plans.

The Jays dropped to (7-6) in the Big East and Butler moved up past them into third place with a record of (8-6). The really interesting and scary part of the Big East tournament is they only take the top four teams. The Bluejays are now in fourth place after the game against Butler. The next Big East takes place in New York against St. Johns who is in second place in the standings.

Creighton started the game hot scoring a run by a single coming from Jen Daro and scoring Michelle Trulin. Butler came around finally by scoring the tying run in the fifth inning. A double by Riley Carter put Butler in position to score when Krosley Odgen hit a single to score her.

The bottom of the ninth was when the drama really began. Riley Carter doubled again to bring home pinch runner Katelyn Cahill with two outs to when the game. Carter was 4-4 on the day with the game winning RBI I the bottom of the ninth.

Obviously this was not a high scoring game. This was a regular pitcher’s duel. Pitching for the Jays Micaela Whitney had a record day, while pitching for the Bulldogs was Kristin Gutierrez who threw the first eight innings. Gutierrez held the Jays to only three hits and one run that came in the first inning of the game. Those three hits came from Aujanae McCoy, Tash Coffiel and Jen Daro. Daro getting the only RBI in the first.

Whitney did all she could to give her team a chance to win the game by striking out 15 bulldogs and holding them to two runs on eight hits. Whitney with her career high strikeouts also had the most strikeouts since former Jay hurler Becca Changstrom struck out 16 batters against Villanova on April 5th 2012. Whitney while striking out 15 also had no walks and threw over 50 percent of her pitches for strikes.

The Bluejays will return to their home field of the CU Sports Complex on Wednesday the 27th to battle against in state rival Nebraska at 6 pm.
