Lightning strikes thrice, outshines senior day

Senior day was particularly gloomy for women’s soccer Sunday as a four hour lightning delay was followed by St. John’s’ Zsani Kajan’s lightning strike of a hat trick that shocked the Jays, 3-0.

The Red Storm’s fifth-year senior forward who entered the game with a Big East best 12 goals on the season got right to business, scoring a simple finish in the fifth minute.

Just 11 minutes later, Kajan struck again off of a Bluejay defensive turnover, putting her team up 2-0 early.

β€œShe’s dangerous any time she gets the ball,” coach Ross Paule said. β€œBut I’m going to be honest with you, we gave her her goals and made her better than the very special player she is.”

The Jays recovered defensively and held their ground against the relentless St. John’s attack for the next 60 minutes of the match.

Offensively, however, the injury-riddled Bluejays could not produce goal scoring chances to get themselves back into the game. The team would finish the match with only one shot on target.

β€œI think we can do a better job of making it more difficult to get the ball off of us,” Paule said. β€œI think we gave the ball away too cheaply.”

Lightning would strike a third time as Kajan’s third shot of the game became her third goal of the game in the 78’ minute with an awkward shot that Creighton’s junior goalkeeper Keelan Terrell misjudged.

The final whistle concluded the Bluejays’ final home match of the season and seniors Cristina Garriga and Daphne Nierop’s final home matches of their careers.

β€œIt’s been a journey but [coming to Creighton] has been the best decision I’ve ever made in my life and I am very grateful,” Nierop said.

Garriga, who suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier in the campaign, cheered her teammates on from the sidelines while Nierop played 65 minutes off the bench Sunday.

β€œI remember recruiting both of them and seeing the potential in them as players and as people,” Paule said. β€œTo see where they are now, I’m very proud of them and I can’t wait to see what they both do.”

The Jays (7-9-2) will have attempted to end their season on a high note Thursday with a road match at Butler.
