Active Minds has partnered with the Counseling Center to put on Creightonβs first Out of the Darkness Walk, an event held across the country by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.Β
Aaliyah Grafe, a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences, has been working with her hometownβs chapter of AFSP for the past four years and decided to bring it to campus this year.Β
Charlie McNellis, a senior in the Heider College of Business, is the representative for Active Minds at Creighton. βActive Minds is all over the country and has chapters at hundreds of schools. We work to end the stigma surrounding mental health conversations,β he said.Β
The event will be held on Saturday, April 1st from 10 a.m. to noon. It is free, and pre-registration is preferred although same-day registration is available and anyone can attend. Departments like the VIP Center and the Creighton dietitian will be tabling to offer resources and awareness. McNellis said he has hopes for these organizations to be sponsors of the walk in the future. Β
βOur main goal is to bring advocacy to campus about suicide prevention. Both of us are very passionate about this issue and this event because of the effort we have put into getting it here and the nature of what we are raising awareness for,β Grafe said.
