Sacco, Rivas crowned at homecoming game

During halftime at the Creighton Men’s soccer game on Saturday, a crowd of 4,711 people cheered as Matt Sacco and Jackie Rivas were crowned Homecoming King and Queen.

Matt Sacco, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, a well-known face on campus, was β€œoverwhelmed with excitement and gratitude” when he heard his name announced as Homecoming King.Β  Β

College of Arts and Sciences senior Jackie Rivas shared a similar sentiment. She said that Homecoming week was important because it provided β€œtime to reflect on our Creighton experiences, and be grateful for the education we’ve received, the experiences we’ve had and the people we’ve met throughout our time here.”

Creighton students were nominated to be on Homecoming Court by other students, faculty or staff, after which they were interviewed. From these candidates, five men and five women were chosen to be on the Homecoming Court, participating in the events of the week including a Wipeout on the KFC lawn, CU’s Got Talent and a hypnotism event.

Kayla Young, Homecoming Traditions Coordinator for CSU and senior in the College of Arts and Sciences, said, β€œI think that Homecoming Court gives students of all ages someone to look up to, and that’s something that we really strove for in our process this year… It’s something more here; it’s not just being on Homecoming Court, it’s understanding the values of this university and how you can impact everyone here on a day-to-day basis.”

Sacco believes that each of the Court members shared one important quality, β€œThe one value that I believe each member had was a willingness to understand where they have failed in their college careers.”

β€œNone of us are perfect success stories and it takes courage to recognize when you aren’t performing at your best. I think it is that courage that allows us to continue to lead in our respective organizations, even when we fail.”

Each member of the Court and the CSU Program Board team helped bring the Creighton community together last week to celebrate The White and The Blue, making Homecoming 2018 a meaningful experience for students, alumni and families alike.
