After a pair of losses on Saturday against Seton Hall, the Creighton softball team got a resounding 4-2 extra innings win on Sunday to close out the series.
The win was the Bluejays (11-10) first in their Big East campaign after having dropped their first three conference games.
In the first game Saturday afternoon, Seton Hall put three runs on the board in the bottom of the second for an early lead.
However, the Bluejays tied it up in the sixth inning when sophomore outfielder Emma Rosonke hit a double with the bases loaded.
Unfortunately for the Bluejays, Seton Hall scored an RBI on a ground out to first for the win.
For the second game of Saturdayβs double-header, the Pirates scored four runs to take an early lead away from Creighton who stranded three batters on bases loaded.
Although the Jays managed to put four points on the board thanks to a home run by Shayna Dahlen as well as runs scored by Brittney Manthie and Megan Miklesh, Seton Hall shut down the Bluejays with a 7-4 win.
βWe are still nicked up a little bit,β coach Brent Vigness said. βWe are not at full strength health wise, so we utilized the people who are available to put us in the best chance to have success.β
The next morning, both teams came ready to play and the game was tied 1-1 in the third inning.
After another Pirates run came across, in the top of the seventh inning, Kailey Wilson hit a solo home run to tie the game once again.
βWhen we came out on Sunday, we all discussed how we wanted to play, and we wanted to play as a team,β junior pitcher Kate Mullally said. βWith that mindset I think we got a lot more done, and we played way better together.β
Mullally pitched five innings in relief in both of Saturdayβs games and tossed a nine inning complete-game Sunday with only two runs allowed and six strikeouts.
In the ninth inning, sophomore catcher Saren Croker and sophomore infielder Madeline Vejvoda would both deliver RBIβs to lead Creighton to a 4-2 victory over Seton Hall.
When asked what changed between Saturday and Sunday, Vigness talked about how valuable fourth year Mullally was to the team.
βKate was a difference maker for us,β he said. βShe threw over 320 pitches on the weekend and she almost had more innings pitched in one weekend than she has had in her entire career at Creighton. She threw all nine innings on Sunday and was still able to execute.β
The Bluejays will look to continue their winning streak in the Big East and will take on Providence at home in a three-game series starting Friday
