Student counseling’s ‘Beating the Bluejay Blues’ uplifts students

Creighton Student Counseling Services hosted their monthly segment of the β€œSnacks & Skills Series: Beating the Bluejay Blues.”

The segment takes place on the last Tuesday of every month in Skutt, with each month centered around a different topic. Food and raffle prizes are also given out during these conversations, and all students in any college are encouraged to attend. Β

This month’s topic was focused around dealing with low moods and strategies to help students get out of the feeling of being β€œstuck.”  Β

Some objectives in this month’s presentation were how to cope and manage stress, as well as how to help one’s mood. Assistant Director for Student Outreach Maddie Moore spoke on how important it is to build a foundation for one’s day-to-day life upon actions such as sleep, hygiene, and movement. Β

The presentation also discussed how to recognize unhealthy coping mechanisms and stressors and treat them in a way that is positive.Β

β€œThis presentation was such an informative experience,” said Abbie Nielsen, a freshman in the College of Arts and Sciences.Β

Students were asked to discuss in small groups how they cope with stress in their lives and how they can approach stress and low moods differently. They were also given lists of ways they can work on coping. Β

β€œI think the point is there is support and we want people to ask for help and get help, but there are things we can do in our daily lives,” Moore said. β€œBy coming to these workshops there are ways to get the ball rolling and check in on our own lives. I think it’s helpful for students because they can see they are not the only ones who struggle with this. You aren’t just born knowing how to care for yourself. This is a good starting point.”
