Joslyn Art Museum reopens, expands by 40%

The Joslyn Art Museum, locatedadjacent to campus next to Heider Hall and Central High School, re-opened this month after a two-year closure for a $100 million renovation.Β 

The Joslyn added over 100 new pieces to its collection and expanded itsgallery space by over 40%. Ground was broken on July 27, 2021, and the museum closed to the public from May 2, 2022 until Sept. 10 of this year, according to the museum’s website.Β 

The main centerpiece of the expansion is the new Rhonda & Howard Hawks Pavilion, over 42,000 square feet in size. This area has workΒ by artists such as Eva Lewitt, Sam Gilliam and JoAnne Carson.Β 

Another addition is the Durham Cafe, featuring a seasonal menuby Clean Slate. Β 

β€œThere’s something on the menu for everyone,” Executive Chef Billy Le said.Β 

Creighton University organizations, including the protestant ministry group The Common Well and the art club, have already visited the renovated museum. Β 

The Joslyn Art Musuemfirst opened in 1931through the Society of Liberal Arts, a nonprofit privately funded by Sarah Joslyn, according to their website. Much of the museum’s collection was originally sourced from gifts from Omaha art collectors, the Art Institute of Omaha and Friends of Art. The museum has undergone two other major renovations in its 93-year-long history.Β 

Admission to the museum is completely free. Β
