Ancient myths get modern special effects

I went into “Clash of the Titans” expecting a cheesy comic-book style movie. Fortunately, that is not at what the movie is like, but it was still not fantastic. It is an entertaining movie, directed at audiences who think special effects are the most important part of movies today.

“Clash of the Titans” depicts the mythical story of Perseus (Sam Worthington), a demi-god and son of Zeus. Those up on their Greek mythology may notice several discrepancies from the original stories to “Clash of the Titans.” The movie combines several mythological stories, including Madusa , the three witches and the Kraken.

The special effects budget on “Clash of the Titans” was obviously huge. It was a clear display of how far the film industry has come in the past ten years. The effects were clean and impressive. The mythical creatures were 100 percent believable and the fighting sequences were convincing and flowed well. There were, however, surprisingly few huge fight sequences, instead there were several small ones. In addition to spectacular special effects, “Clash of the Titans” also is armed with a breath-taking score, composed by Ramin Djawadi.

For all its technical feats, however, the story of “Clash of the Titans” was not as strong as it could have been. I am partial to Greek mythology, so I enjoyed it, but it is not the strongest aspect of the movie. The acting could have been better as well. Ralph Fiennes stole the show with his depiction of Hades. It was truly evil, but reminded me a little too much of his role as Voldemort in the “Harry Potter” films to impress me. Worthington maintains the attention of the audience purely because he seems to actually have the attractiveness of a demi-god; his acting is far from god-like.

“Clash of the Titans” is a good movie, depending on its special effects and technical feats rather than acting and storyline. It is entertaining and enjoyable, but the storyline has room for improvements; the ending is anticlimactic and rather disappointing. And for guys looking for a movie to entertain by showing lots gore and fighting, prepare for disappointment. The focus of the film is not on the fighting and there are surprisingly few scenes with large amounts of action for a movie that is supposed to have depict a war with the Gods.
