Roman named student employee of the year 2013

Arts & Sciences senior Xuchyll Roman has been named Creighton’s Student Employee of the Year. Roman has worked in the Office of Undergraduate Admission for four years and will be honored at a luncheon in April.Β

Roman was surprised to hear of her achievement when she found out about the award during a busy morning at work.

β€œI thought I was going to find out about another project I could do,” Roman said. β€œI was shocked to find out I was selected because I had no idea that such an award existed. I definitely felt that it was an honor and I’m glad that it was a nice way to start rounding up my senior year.”

This is the 21st year the award has been given out, and all winners receive a letter of recognition from the Rev. Timothy R. Lannon, S.J. The selection is made by a team of supervisors who rank the nominees, who are ranked in areas such as quality of work, professional attitude, interpersonal skills and reliability.

According to Therese McGrath, who is in charge of Student Employment, Roman was extremely reliable, which McGrath believes is one of the most important traits of a student employee

β€œXuchyll’s attendance over almost four years was impeccable,” McGrath said. β€œThis shows an enormous respect for her employer.”

Xuchyll also picked up early morning and late night shifts.

Xuchyll is originally from Hawaii was also responsible for implementing a new program for prospective students from Hawaii, a program she started as a freshman that continues to this day.

β€œThis respect for her job and her ability to contribute new ideas to her department is very impressive,” McGrath said. β€œShe represents what Creighton is all about, above and beyond the classroom.”

As associate director of admissions, Joseph Bezousek has been Roman’s supervisor and first told her the news.

β€œThe Admissions Office is so pleased to have Xuchyll in the admissions office to greet all of our prospective students with a smile,” Bezousek said.

To achieve this award, students must be full time undergraduate students who have worked in their department for at least six months.

β€œStudents make a very important contribution to Creighton by working on campus along with attending classes,” McGrath said. β€œMost departments rely on students to supplement their full time staff. Students bring a refreshing perspective to the work site and can offer new and innovative ideas. The work habits they develop here can help them transition into their professional careers.”
